Between 1988 and 1991 I wrote for the industry body, the Cement and Concrete Association of Australia promoting the uses of concrete in domestic and commercial construction. The crowning achievement of my time at the C&CAA was the publication of a training manual entitled Concrete Basics.
Concrete Basics was designed to simply and effectively communicate highly technical information about the properties of concrete for workers from a non-English speaking background.
This was a collaborative project working with an artist and industry professionals to understand the level of technical information construction workers needed to perform their jobs without sacrificing quality.
So successful was the book that it won the Skilled AFCC Award for Excellence in the Construction Industry over a highly competitive field and, 25 years later, it is still in print.
